Shiro Saigo, known as the "Genius of Judo," was one of the Kodokan's legendary Four Guardians who helped establish judo's dominance over traditional jujutsu schools. His throwing technique, particularly his devastating yama-arashi (mountain storm), became the stuff of legend and inspired the novel and film "Sugata Sanshiro" — one of Akira Kurosawa's earliest works.
