Iso Mataemon co-founded Tenjin Shinyo-ryu, one of the two primary jujutsu styles that Jigoro Kano studied before creating judo. The school's emphasis on atemi (striking) and ground pins made it one of the most influential jujutsu traditions in Japanese martial arts history.
