Gigo Funakoshi, the third son of Shotokan founder Gichin Funakoshi, is credited with modernizing Shotokan's technique by introducing the deep stances, long-range kicks, and dynamic movements that distinguish it from Okinawan karate. Though he died young from tuberculosis, his innovations define the art practiced today.
