Q: DO ANY MARTIAL ART SCHOOLS TEACH MILITARY CQC?

Sunday June 14, 2009

A: The hand to hand systems the armed forces teach are specifically designed NOT to kill. This prevents casualties among them. When you have lots of testosterone pumped males in a stressful job, they are going to fight. Teaching them grappling or jujitsu gives them an outlet on each other without maiming. Now if you want to learn the stuff the spec. op guys do, that's different. But even they mostly use tools (knife, sidearm) for CQC. As far as martial arts go, most if not all are sport/money based. 1. They have built in safeties and rules to keep opponents from seriously hurting each other. 2. They are designed to prolong the match for the viewers. I'm not saying what you learn can't be useful for self-defense. I'm just saying thats not the main goal of many schools. And I know I'll probably get a thumbs down for saying all that but oh well.

A: Well, the goal of just about every martial art in the world is to end the fight as soon as possible. Some martial arts have techniques that are intended to be lethal, some do not. No, you do not have to join the military. You'll get better "CQC" training outside of the military. They only teach it for a few weeks before moving on to something else. They teach techniques effective enough to hold off an enemy until help arrives, but not effective enough to kill.
